A man is in custody after barricading himself inside an apartment complex in Butner, leading to an eight-hour standoff.

The standoff began Tuesday night at the Edgewood Bridge Apartments, where a man was barricaded inside an apartment for more than eight hours.

Law enforcement was finally able to take the man into custody after he surrendered around 5 a.m. on Wednesday.

It was around 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday when the Granville County Sheriff's Office said a man shot into an apartment next door.

A mother, father and young children were inside the apartment. The bullet nearly missed a father who was giving his 3-year-old daughter a bath at the time, the family told WRAL News.

"So he bends down to put a towel around her and he hears something go 'Pow!'," said the sister of the man who was nearly shot. "When he heard 'pow' he reaches and grabbed her, he grabbed the boys, all of them went to the floor ... he scooped them into the bedroom, and he looks up, and right where he was standing there's a bullet hole."

Thankfully, no one was injured.

Neighbors told WRAL News the man had been causing problems for months, threatening and harassing people.

Deputies were using robots and bullhorns to negotiate with the suspect and trying to get him to surrender. Deputies from other counties were also called in to assist.

The State Bureau of Investigation stepped in to take over around 2:30 a.m.

Residents were evacuated shortly thereafter around 2:45 a.m., according to a source.

A police robot was seen being escorted into the building.
